Our modern microFTIR system can help us analyze materials such as polymers, coatings, fibers, rubber and some inorganic materials and can be used to identify unknown organic contaminants as small as 10 microns. SEM & EDS analysis can be paired with micro FTIR analysis for a  more thorough analysis about a materials' properties, since micro FT-IR analysis can provide the molecular structure of an unknown material, . MicroFTIR may also be helpful in  the investigation of  failure analysis, and analysis of geological samples.

Houston Electron Microscopy is here to be your microFT-IR analysis department and your SEM/EDS department.

Micro FT-IR

The image below illustrates a small sample measuring about half an inch and points to the area optically magnified along with a map and its corresponding spectra resulting from the micro ft-ir analysis.

Material Identification

Below is an image of a reinforced hose magnified with a light microscope. micro FTIR analysis of both materials results in the spectra shown. The spectra shows the functional groups for material identification and its molecular composition.

Micro FT-IR System

Houston Electron Microscopy is equipped with state-of-the-art micro FT-IR system, a Thermo Scientific™ Nicolet™ iN™10 Infrared Microscope. A material's composition may be identified using either transmission, reflection, or ATR modes. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) measures the absorption or reflectance of infrared radiation at different wavelengths and an infrared spectrum is produced.
